Would someone please try to explain to me why this show is funny?
I just don’t get it. I’ve tried to get it, I even watched an episode literally right before I decided to write this just to give it one last shot at getting it…but nope, still sucks.
I think there are some humorous moments surrounded by over the top acting and missing the mark writing. It’s those moments that let you know there are good writers screaming to get good stuff done, but at the end day pouring sugar onto crap doesn’t change the taste.
So why does a screenwriter for film care about a TV show?
Because the American public apparently disagrees with me…and those are the same people I have to write for (and a few chosen international markets…but that’s another post). Luckily I care more about what films they go to see…a smaller group to worry about.
TALLEDEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY ($148 million domestic)
WILD HOGS ($138 million domestic)
Okay…maybe I should be a little worried.
I really did love the WILD HOGS screenplay…man was that a blown opportunity.
If SCARED GUYS finally makes it to the screen someday and it’s not as funny as the read…I really am going to be pissed.
Before I go any further a full disclosure:
What I do not find funny: Dane Cook, 30 Rock (except for Alec Baldwin), SNL, King of the Hill and Hillary Clinton
What really makes me laugh: Eddie Izzard, Boston Legal, Family Guy, Extras, Curb your Enthusiasm and Hilary Clinton.
That being said, the reality of SCRUBS is like the false reality of Andy Milman in WHEN THE WHISLTE BLOWS on EXTRAS.
“Are you having a laugh”…nope not me.
I feel so sorry for the cast of SCRUBS, just think how terribly guilty they must feel by all the fame and fortune.
Sorry…I know…don’t know what I was thinking there.
Anyway…
I will always feel happy for anyone who gets to write professionally on anything. I know there is no contest between moral dilemma and taking care of yourself or family. But here’s a nice chicken and the egg for you…what came first…what the TV viewing public finds funny…or what we are telling them is funny. I for one don’t think you can make anyone laugh at anything they don’t find funny.
So?
SCRUBS must be funny! I must be wrong. There has to be something wrong with me. I guess that’s why they call it a sense of humor. I just don’t have that comedic sense that SCRUBS is funny.
Maybe someday I will too become enlightened.
Uh huh…okay.

I don’t like the first season or two. I don’t like the current season. But there are season in between that are hysterical. It’s probably going to depend on who takes the lead writing but I’ve never bothered enough to look at who writes the funny ones.
I wish I knew which season that was. I sure don’t want to hunt through 3 of them. I always want to watch something that’s written funny and excuted just as well. If anyone can narrow down the season or even an episode…please tell me. I’ll be more than happy to watch it. Although my feelings about the series in general will probably not change.
I can understand why the current Scrubs fails to impress. I continue to watch it, cringing, murmuring to myself, “This used to be my favorite show…”
If you want to invest some time understanding the best parts of the series, catch the first six episodes of season one. Then skip to episodes 21-24 (though ep 15 is one of my personal favorites, and pivotal to the story.) That final episode of the first season does a fantastic job of making you want to watch season 2. Season 2 is when the show starts taking off, in my mind. Brendan Frasier and Amy Smart add a lot. Rick Schroeder doesn’t. Season 3 is hit or miss, but has some of the very most brilliant episodes. Low points involve roof toilets. High points involve butterflies and Brendan Frasier again. Sadly, seasons 4 and on lack the strength of earlier episodes.
If you don’t want to invest, but just want to see the best (though not always funniest)episodes , try 1-1, 1-4, 1-15, 1-24/2-1, 2-13, 3-14, 3-16.
Interestingly, the user ratings at TV.com seem eerily accurate. They skew really high, presumably because it’s mostly fans who do the rating. However, if you read them exponentially, like a richter scale (that is, a 9.5 is ten times better than a 9.4) you get a good indicator of which episodes to watch. http://www.tv.com/scrubs/show/3613/top.html?tag=subtabs;top You see the scores dip into the 8s for later seasons, with the episodes that earned them an Emmy nomination being the highest rated of season 5. That said, I have no explanation for why last week’s episode, “My Long Goodbye,” scored so high.
